The explosive growth of frontier artificial intelligence models and autonomous agents has created an unprecedented engineering challenge. While public attention focuses primarily on model weights and user-facing chat interfaces, the true bottleneck in scaling AI innovation lies in internal operational infrastructure. Companies building the human intelligence layer for AI need robust, highly performant internal developer platforms, reliable data pipelines, and scalable workflow automation systems.
micro1—the leading AI data lab powering frontier model training and agent evaluations—is expanding its core engineering team with a high-impact, full-time remote opening: the Software Engineer, Internal Platforms role. Offering a competitive base salary of $120,000 to $160,000 USD per year coupled with equity compensation, comprehensive benefits (including up to 100% health insurance premium reimbursement and 401(k) matching), and total location independence, this position is engineered for ambitious fullstack developers who thrive in high-ownership, fast-moving environments.
Whether you are looking to transition into the fast-paced AI infrastructure sector, take full end-to-end ownership of core internal systems, or collaborate with top-tier technical talent building the future of machine learning, this comprehensive guide explores the role's core responsibilities, technical stack, compensation breakdown, and a clear roadmap for completing your application successfully.
Software Engineer, Internal Platforms
Role Overview: Take high-ownership of fullstack development across micro1's core internal platform systems, building robust APIs, scalable backend services, and performant frontend interfaces that power AI operations.
The Mission: Building Internal Developer Infrastructure for AI Scale
Scaling a global expert network to train and evaluate AI models requires massive operational throughput. As micro1 rapidly expands its network of specialized professionals across finance, healthcare, STEM engineering, and law, the internal systems powering vetting, data ingestion, evaluation loops, and task routing must scale seamlessly without friction.
As a Software Engineer on the Internal Platforms core team, you will not be writing isolated features in a silo; you will own critical operational infrastructure end-to-end. Your code directly empowers internal operations teams, product managers, and external expert contributors by removing technical bottlenecks and ensuring ultra-high platform reliability and observability.
What You Will Own and Build:
- End-to-End Fullstack Architecture: Design, develop, and scale fullstack systems powering critical internal workflows, vetting pipelines, and platform capabilities.
- Scalable Backend Services & APIs: Build clean, modular backend services with clear contracts, utilizing TypeScript, Node.js (with NestJS familiarity a strong plus), and secure RESTful APIs.
- Performant Frontend Interfaces: Create intuitive, high-performance user interfaces in React that internal stakeholders and operations teams rely on daily.
- Database Optimization & Schema Design: Participate actively in relational database modeling, schema design, and query tuning using PostgreSQL to maintain high data integrity under heavy loads.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with product, design, and operations teams to translate ambiguous requirements into concrete, highly scalable technical systems.
- Reliability & Observability: Improve developer experience, platform reliability, and system observability by establishing robust testing standards, CI/CD pipelines, and proactive monitoring practices.
💡 The Engineering Philosophy: micro1 operates in a fast-moving, high-growth environment where engineers are expected to make pragmatic tradeoffs between speed, scalability, and maintainability. If you thrive on autonomy and love building internal developer tooling that multiplies team output, this role is built for you.
Required Qualifications and Technical Proficiencies
Because micro1 builds cutting-edge AI infrastructure, engineering standards are exceptionally high. Candidates are evaluated on both technical execution and problem-solving mindset:
- Fullstack Engineering Experience: Demonstrated professional experience, internships, or robust personal project history building and maintaining production-grade fullstack systems.
- TypeScript & Modern Frameworks: Strong TypeScript fundamentals spanning both frontend and backend development, alongside proficiency in React and Node.js ecosystems.
- Relational Database Expertise: Solid understanding of relational databases, specifically PostgreSQL, alongside core data modeling and query optimization principles.
- Cloud & Distributed Architecture: Familiarity with cloud infrastructure platforms such as AWS, RESTful communication patterns, and modern microservices or event-driven architectures.
- Preferred Backgrounds: Prior experience building internal developer platforms (IDPs), operational dashboard tooling, CI/CD automation, or working within high-growth startup and AI-adjacent environments.
Compensation, Benefits, and Remote Culture
micro1 is committed to supporting a high-performing, remote-first workforce through a comprehensive and competitive compensation and benefits package:
- Base Salary Range: $120,000 – $160,000 USD base salary, commensurate with experience and technical impact.
